A Small Business Insurance Conversation: What to Bring

Prepare for a commercial insurance discussion by outlining your operations, property, vehicles, employees, and current coverage questions before comparing quotes.

Start with a picture of your business

No two businesses operate exactly alike. A shop with inventory, a contractor working at customer sites, and a company with delivery vehicles each bring different questions to a coverage conversation. You do not need to arrive with the answers to every insurance question. A clear description of what you do is the most useful starting point.

Make a short list before you talk

Operations: What products or services do you provide? Where does the work take place? Do you use subcontractors or work at customer locations?

Property: Do you own or lease a building? What equipment, tools, or inventory are important to your operation? What might it take to replace them?

Vehicles: Are vehicles owned by the business, and how are they used? Personal auto and commercial auto policies may address different uses.

People: Do you have employees? Coverage needs and requirements can differ by state and industry. Share the basics so your agent can ask more specific questions.

Current coverage: If you have an existing policy, note its limits, deductibles, and any questions you have about exclusions or changes to your business.

Compare coverage, not just a premium

A business quote may include several pieces, such as general liability, property, commercial auto, or other coverage appropriate to the operation. When comparing options, ask what each part addresses and what it does not. Make sure a lower price is not simply the result of a lower limit or a missing coverage.
