Five Home Insurance Details Worth Reviewing Before Renewal

Renewal is a chance to check the details

It is easy to let a home insurance policy renew without opening the documents. But your home, belongings, and finances can change over a year. A short review can reveal questions worth asking before you make another decision based on premium alone.

Keep your current declarations page nearby. It is a helpful snapshot of the coverages and limits on your policy, though the full policy terms govern coverage.

Five places to look

1. Dwelling coverage. The amount needed to rebuild a house is not the same as its market value. Ask how the dwelling limit was determined and whether any renovations should be reflected.

2. Personal property. Consider new furniture, electronics, tools, or valuables purchased since your last review. Certain categories may have special limits or require a separate conversation.

3. Personal liability. Read the liability limit and think about whether it still fits your circumstances. If you have questions about what the policy addresses, ask your agent for an explanation.

4. Deductibles. A deductible affects what you pay toward a covered loss. Look for any separate deductible that might apply to wind or hail, and make sure the amount is comfortable for your budget.

5. Changes to the property or household. An addition, remodel, home business, new household member, or another change may be worth discussing. Tell your agent what’s different.

Questions to bring to the conversation

Ask what is covered, what is excluded, and whether a separate policy is needed for a risk you care about. For example, flood coverage is generally separate from standard homeowners coverage. If you are comparing a new quote, check limits and deductibles side by side with your existing policy.
